If you know what I mean… Over the past few years, we have seen increased references of the Indian culture in Hollywood productions. More and more Indian actors are being casted in Hollywood dramas and movies and they seem to be fitting in just well! Not only this, India is now one of the top destinations for music concerts and events. Various locations in the country have been increasingly used as shooting sites for Hollywood movies. Celebrities are visiting the country for personal vacations and celebrations. This increased involvement of the country India in Hollywood forces some of us to think what could possibly be the reason of the Bollywood and Indian craze in Hollywood.

It almost seems like India is the new trend in Hollywood. One can recall what a rage Katy Perry created when she chose Rajasthan, India as her wedding destination in the year 2010. The week-long affair was cent percent Indian style, with elephants, palaces, Carnatic musical orchestra and everything Indian. Not only Katy Perry, but many other famed Hollywood celebrities like Heidi Klum, Elizabeth Hurley and American author Padma Lakshmi have tied the knots in traditional Hindu style in India.

Selena Gomez’s music video ‘Come and get it’ was shot in an Indian style with Indian musical instruments and garments. Coldplay’s music video ‘Hymn for the weekend’ has entirely been shot in India. So has been the music video for ‘Monuments’ by the rock bank Mutemath. India has also seen numerous concerts and visits by Hollywood musicians like Coldplay, Katy Perry, Enrique Iglesias, Megadeth, Metallica and many others. Also, this year in 2017, notable stars like Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran are coming to India. The list goes on.

The movie Slumdog Millionaire is one major contributing factor to the increasing trend of Bollywood in Hollywood. But the list goes back. We all loved Naseeruddin Shah’s character ‘Nemo’ in the 2003 action-thriller The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Irfan Khan has garnered a lot of attention and acclaim too for his roles in Hollywood movies like Slumdog Millionaire, The Amazing Spider Man, Jurassic World, Life of Pi, The Warrior and A Mighty Heart. And now, with the Priyanka Chopra starrer Quantico, one is left with no reason to doubt that an Indian actor cannot win American hearts.

A major portion of this change can be owed to the globalization movement, whose effects are now being seen more than ever. India is the world’s fastest growing economy and with a West-loving population, creating a liking for Hollywood and international star-cast has been no difficult task. The youth of the urban cities of the country is a fan of American and British sit-coms and movies. An increasing education rate and a focus on international languages has helped shape this movement.

Our Prime-Minister Modi Ji’s efforts and international trips have helped garner a lot of international investors and this has taken India to the top of popularity charts. Rest assured, it seems like the most important factor will remain India’s rich cultural and traditional heritage that might be missing in many countries’ histories. The rich flavours of Indian traditions mesmerize all and will continue to help unite industries across the world.
